When I think goth. I think more of Byron and Shelly...poet laurettes type thing...or old churches filled with red candles and many crosses...or full moons casting shadows down on the graves in a quaint churchyard...Poe...Jack Sceleton...that type of thing. What does it mean to everyone else??

It is the way you are, how you live, how you see life, but most important, how you feel!!!
I think it finds you, you can't find it and when it does, everything you have posted above is a comfort!!!

Hi. My name is Ariadne and I'm new here.

I think of Goth in the theories of Carl Jung, who once argued that inside everyone there is a Shadow, or dark, side. Some people repress it and end up doing horrid things (like serial killers). He argued that for a person to whole, they must accept their Shadow side.

I define Goths as people who have accepted their Shadow side, and feel no need to disguise it.

BINGO! For me it has nothing really to do with the clothes. Although, I do enjoy the fashion. There are folks who are purely into that aspect of things which for me is really only about costumes and attempting to express oneself differently than the mainstream.

It's underneath the clothing in which lies the darker side of things that I find I am attracted to, although that is not all that makes me, me.

Carl Jung came of age during the Romantic Period, which had a large influence on his philosophies and in turn was influenced by his work:

from the Wikipedia entry on Romanticism:

"...Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in late 18th century Western Europe. In part a revolt against aristocratic, social, and political norms of the Enlightenment period and a reaction against the rationalization of nature, in art and literature it stressed strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe experienced in confronting the sublimity of nature. It elevated folk art, nature and custom, as well as arguing for an epistemology based on usage and custom. It was influenced by ideas of the Enlightenment and elevated medievalism and elements of art and narrative perceived to be from the medieval period..."

This period of time also spawned classically "Gothic" pieces of philosophy and literature by authors such as Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, Victor Hugo and Washington Irving.

Even if they themselves are unaware of it, most people who consider themselves "Goth" have an affinity for the philosophies of the Romantic Period.

Aside from Gothic Architecture and The Gothic Era, when we're speaking of people, I feel that Goth is something deep inside that cannot be changed, but just needs to be accepted. Its like water for fish, we can't live with out it. What "It" is, varies from individual to individual, as I think there are as many types of Goth as there are people who cling to the word... I don't like to sit around and say who is and who isn't goth, because I believe that the culture can embrace manson goths, matrix goths, victorian fashion goths and glitter goths. Sure, there are Gother than thous out here, who feel that being so, and putting down others makes them more Goth but you know something? It doesn't.
Now, on to my personal opinion...:D
for me, Goth is an intense state of mind, in which I find my dark creative nature. It's always present in my being, though sometimes, its more obvious than other times. I am a double capricorn, which I believe plays heavily into my gothic nature. I do run through short bouts of depression on occasion, like everyone does, but i don't think that being mopey and depressed all the time is what Goth is all about. Now, if you want to be mopey and depressed and wear nothing but black, because you are aching so and.....well you know, go right ahead, I won't judge you for it. I do love the dark fashion that crosses the lines between kink and culture though.:D K, rambled on enough for one night my pretties. heeee!
