brown goth?

please forgive my ignorance and indulge my curiosity: is there a tribe for dark-skinned goths?

i may be searching on the wrong key words, but i'm not finding specific posts or tribes that address this. i see info all around on lightening skin and white makeup to acheive the look, but i'd like to know how folks with browner skins work within the aesthetic. how does one avoid looking grey and ashen, or is that the goal? the idea of having an elementally deep black skin is appealing to me (think ebonized, lacquered) but that could look like "blackface" on a lighter brown person...

thanx for your thoughts

Goth isnt limited to skin color. It would be rather racist.

To avoid the ashen look..? I like that look too. Any makeup artists here? Meanwhile Ill ask some that I know. Its a good question though. Its a lot about the colors you use on top of your natural color to achieve that pale pasty dead look.

    thanx for the input, kids...

...gothalot, i see what you mean but i'm just asking about the gear and makeup and stuff, not the social ramifications of skin color...i've floated through a lot of scenes over the years, and have seen very few brown faces in my little tastes of goth culture...my interests in bdsm provide occaision to goth it up, and i'm researching what's at my disposal when dressing the role.

I gotcha, true though. Usually at any given event depending on geography Im lucky if I see any ethnic diversity. I like diversity myself and feel uncomforatble when there isnt any.

Fetish wear does have its limitations creative wise. It tends to have an off the rack look and heavily processed in the BDSM subculture. I can see why you would want to branch out to something creative. I tend to mix it up with a goth/fetish/period look mixed in with Burning Man influences.

One of my aqaintences back in the day was African American. She had medium toned skin, not very dark but not very light either. She wore mostly whites and silvers. She even found white liquid liner to do her makeup. She looked awesome! She also did tribal makeup and she just looked stunning. Though it was white, it gave her an otherworldly ghostly feeling. Perhaps that's an idea for you?

most african american goths i know seem to focus more on fun eyemake up colors, hair colors /falls and such - rather than focusing on their skin tone as part of the aesthetic. i really wish there was more multicultural presence within the scene.

In my experience as an African-American Goth, it's a matter of perspective as to whether or not an African-American is considered "Goth". When I go out, people always seem to find other ways of describing me because the stereotype of the Gothic subculture is so centered on the Vampire aesthetic. Dressed down, I'm considered an athlete or a thug; dressed up, I'm considered...dressed up. It was only with the release of the Matrix movies, with Lawrence Fishburn's character Morpheus, that my personal style has gained consideration as possibly being something that might be considered "Gothic".

I've also held the belief for quite a while now that there is a stronger Gothic vein in African-American culture than people, even those who are a part of the culture, realize. For example, as a demographic, African-Americans make up a disproportionately large percentage of movie ticket buyers for Horror and Thriller-themed movies. Another example might be the Goth-like focus on and philosophic examination of death and the meaning of live in segments of Rap music (Tupac Shakur was a very good example of this).

While the local "scene" here is almost completely devoid of minorities of any kind (although part of the blame for this can also be placed on the demographics of this heavily Scandinavian state), I see more than a few African-Americans around town whose personal style is clear evidence of Gothic leanings.

If you know what to look for.

Whoops...I nearly forgot about the now-defunct Goths of Color website. Lucy Furr, the person who ran it, once published a very interesting article on Morbid Outlook in which she discussed Gothic culture from the perspective of ethnic minorities. It's still available there at: www.morbidoutlook.com/lifesty...ur.html.
